  • Alistair Parlett
    Natural Power
Alistair Parlett High Voltage Systems Manager
    Natural Power
    View Bio

What does your day typically consist of?

I am in the process of transferring from the role of Head of Site Management to High Voltage (HV) Systems Manager, so my day typically involves working with Wind Farm Area Managers and other business functions to ensure the delivery of asset management services to onshore and offshore operational projects, while also developing the HV/OFTO part of the business. I am also responsible for the implementation of safety rules within Natural Power, including the training and appointment of internal and external personnel.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The diversity of work and the opportunity to contribute to the development of the business, and working closely with other business functions in a way that is not always possible in larger organisations.

How did you get into the role in the first place?

Having worked in various industries in engineering and technical management roles, I joined Natural Power in 2003 as the first Wind Farm Manager when the asset management part of the business was relatively new, with responsibility for Bowbeat Wind Farm followed by Crystal Rig Wind Farm. I progressed into more senior roles and supported the development of the country-wide site management team, culminating in appointment as Head of Site Management. High Voltage support has always been one of Natural Power's key services and coupled with Control Room services this has naturally led us into the OFTO market where opportunities are such that a new business unit has been created, hence my new role.

What is your degree and/or professional qualification?

Engineering craft trade training leading to a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering and registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

What is the most interesting type of work you have done and why?

Developing and implementing the operational systems and procedures, and safety rules for HV systems and wind turbines, including participation in the RUK Operational Safety Rules Group. Delivering training in wind turbine safety rules (WTSR) to our own staff and to clients has allowed Natural Power to demonstrate competence in this field and apply for WTSR Approved Trainer status with RUK.

What is your biggest achievement at work?

Helping to build the site management team and seeing year-on-year success in the delivery of high quality services to the point where we can now justifiably offer total asset management solutions to clients.
